Fashion is a Relative Phenomenon

Sorry Rihanna, your on your own with this one.
If I find myself with an event, and outing, a date with my hubby, it is not out of the question for me to put my full efforts into looking “put together.” Although I have never made myself a slave to splendiferous vanity (just ask me the last time I shopped), a certain amount of effort is certainly made. Depending on the situation, an outfit that might be appropriate in one setting may make you look like a space alien in another. It has always been a secret fear of mine that I will show up to an event in the wrong event’s attire (think of Legally Blonde, where Elle shows up in a costume, while everyone else is in preppy-chic).
For example: I remember one brisk college day, walking what seemed like “miles” to my astronomy lab, I passed a girl dressed full-on for “the club.” I blinked at her disbelieving anyone in their right mind would dress this way in a walking-in-the-cold-wind-on-the-way-to-a-class-full-of-half-asleep-scruffy-students-who-couldn’t-care-less. If she were at a hip downtown club, she would have been totally appropriate; on campus in DENTON, not so much! …Then again…I could be wrong, she may have been on her way to “Pole Dancing 101″ or “How to find your Sugar Daddy Honors.” :)
That’s why is is always good to find out the details of your event/outing in advance. Unless you are just a “pistol” and like to keep people guessing!

Why can’t people properly identify the times when they should be quiet? Is common courtesy too much to ask for at the movie theaters? Ridiculous! Just because you aren’t on a cell phone, doesn’t mean you aren’t irritating the heck out of the people around you.
I saw a movie tonight and had to turn around many times to give “the look” to some vocal troublemakers. You may assume that they were teenagers…nope, they were over the hill, full-fledged adults. My husband finally had to shush them. Ridiculous.
In fact, the past several movies I have seen all vocal (and texting with bright blue screen) disturbances have come from people over 45. Give me a break; I did not pay $12 to watch a movie to have unsolicited commentary from some bozo! If you can’t keep your trap shut, wait for the DVD. There’s nothing worse than a movie-talker. Especially if their comments are directed at the on-screen characters, or if they are giving a plot synopsis to their clueless significant other. I once sat next to a man who not only took a cell phone call, but maintained it for nearly 5 minutes; he’s lucky I didn’t have those artificial-cheese-nachos, because he totally would have had a new toupee. It really gets my ire up.
Depeche Mode said it best: “Enjoy the Silence.”
A random act of puppetry….

We went to the symphony last night. Everything was wonderful and beautiful before the intermission. We had noticed on the program that there was to be a “puppet performance”, but since we had not seen any signs of puppetry (pre-intermission) we thought it might be a fluke.
After intermission, the lights dimmed, the beautiful music began….and then there were puppets. I have to say, I tried to remain objective and optimistic…but it was just weird! Are we so attention-deficit plagued that we must add “flair” to things that are perfectly good on their own? Maybe if I was a small child (although some of the puppets actions were a bit racy), and this had been advertised as “children’s symphony”, it would have made more sense? I found it entirely distracting.
Also, the snarky giggles of some tweens, seated behind us, only added to the horror. And when they weren’t snickering and whispering, they were shuffling their feet around like a bunch of horses (seriously, you should be DENIED high heels, unless you can handle the responsibility….seriously).
We couldn’t help wondering if the “puppet” feature would have been more enjoyable, if the puppets hailed from a memorable and high-class puppet circuit;…..perhaps Kermit the Frog could have added the needed class to the occasion.
Bizarre.
